NEWS-UKE-IN-USE! January 3, 2011 HAU'OLI MAKAHIKI HOU! (Happy New Year!) Can you believe it? 2010 seems to have just flown by and here we are in 2011! We've met so many great folks over the last year and played some great gigs, just to name a few.... June: Zion IL wedding on the IL State Beach July: Oak Park's 4th of July Parade; Old Town School of Folk Music - 'Beatles Celebration: Brendan Hedges Scholarship Fundraiser' August: The Fest For Beatles Fans 'Battle of the Beatles Bands' (an annual Beatles convention at the Hyatt O'Hare Regency Hotel) September: "Get Back" Beatles Month-Long Beatles Celebration at the Niles Public Library with emcee WXRT DJ & 2010 National Radio Hall of Famer, Terri Hemmert; "The Mighty Uke- Ukulele documentary, debut at Gene Siskel Film Center' ...and so many more amazing and fun gigs! Our Thursday nights sessions, The OAK PARK UKULELE MEETUP GROUP continues to increase in numbers with new ukulele players, both beginners and 'seasoned' players, as well as onlookers. More players mean more songsheets and better organization. And because of this, I enlisted additional help from our 'ukulele ohana', fellow members: Brenda Watkins, continues to be my 'right-hand' person and Assistant Organizer of the OP Meetup Group Annie Wegener, continues to be my 'left-hand' person and Assistant Organizer Jamie Tomaiso, continues to be an Asst. Organizer Wayne Kitzman, continues to be an Asst. Organizer and Sgt.-In-Arms Chris McIntosh, became Asst. Organizer in 2010 Kelsey Fitsgerald, one of our newer and younger members, new Asst. Oraganizer; she also works at Wonderwall! Managing our song sheets is very time-consuming (and paper-eating). Thus the need for volunteers like our the Assistant Organizers who come to Wonderwall a couple hours prior to the Thursday night Ukulele Meetup sessions to help make copies and organize everything. It takes an average of 2 people to do this job. Many of the songs we play on Thursday nights are songs 'this' performance group, Wonderwall's Harrison Street Ukulele Players' perform. We have additional rehearsals every week so we can focus on our vocals, strum patterns, solos, everything! NEW & EXCTING THINGS AND CHANGES IN STORE FOR OUR THURSDAY NIGHT MEETUPS! So keep up-to-date with happenings with The Harrison Street Ukulele Players! Join our Oak Park Ukulele Meetup Group! Go to: www.ukulele.meetup.com/89 The BEST news of 2010 is that son and his Hawai'i Army National Guard unit was due to depart Afghanistan by year's end and head home to Honolulu! And after several delayed flights, they all made it home and reunited with their families on January 2, 2011! WELCOME HOME!
