| About GiGi Wong-Monaco. GiGi is a Honolulu native (yes, Obama's BIRTHPLACE!), learned to play the ukulele as a keiki (child) in school like all kids in Hawai'i. She played it off and on throughout her life. It is part of the Hawaiian culture, the 'spirit of aloha' which is about 'love and sharing'. GiGi's professional musical background includes two Chicago music groups that she and her artist-husband, Clar Monaco founded: This Naked Body (90's pop/rock band) and Sandalwood Sitar Music Ensemble (Indian classical/semi-classical music group; 1998-present). Shortly after opening Wonderwall Music Shoppe & Emporium with her husband in 2006, she started playing ukulele with some friends at the store on Harrison Street. Over the next couple years, more ukulele players came to play. Eventually, GiGi had to move the group elsewhere. Eastgate Cafe' had just opened for business in Spring 2008 and took the group there. Later in the year, GiGi officially formed the Oak Park Meetup Group aka The Harrison Street Ukulele Players. Three months after its inception, the group was asked to perform 'live' on CBS2 Chicago 'Early Morning News' in honor of the inauguration of President Barack Obama. The ukulele group also played the only 'Hawaiian-style' Inauguration Bash which GiGi organized. To date, there are over 100 members. She leads the weekly Ukulele Meetup sessions Thursday nights Oak Park. In 2009, she was the organizer of the World Record Attempt For The Largest Ukulele Ensemble in Chicago at The Fest For Beatles Fans annual convention. An instructional video of how to play "Love Me Do" was on YouTube. Though the record was not broken, everyone had a lot of fun! GiGi is: A life-long, accomplished artist. Click here for more info.
