"MAY DAY is Lei Day in Hawai'i".

"The first 'Lei Day' was held on May 1, 1928. Everyone in Honolulu was encouraged to wear a 'lei'. There were festivities downtown of hula, music,
lei making demonstrations, exhibits and lei making contests.

In 1929, 'Lei Day' became an official holiday in
the 'Territory of Hawai'i' and was only interrupted during WWII."


'Lei Day' or 'May Day' celebration continues today with state-wide parades including a Royal Hawaiian court with a King and Queen and flower floats.

On a much smaller scale, Wonderwall Music Shoppe & Emporium proudly presents their annual 'May Day Program', celebrating one of Hawai'i' best
loved occasions. And, once again, the participating venue will be:

May is also Asian Pacific-Islander Heritage Month.
Wonderwall's co-owner GiGi Wong-Monaco is the driving force behind all Wonderwall sponsored Hawaiian (and Beatles) related events in Oak Park and Chicagoland. A Honolulu native, she continues to promote and help educate people about her Hawaiian and Asian culture. GiGi, who is also part Japanese, was the main organizer of the April 14, 2011,
"HELP! JAPAN Fundraiser",
a Beatles theme event, and raised over $5000 with proceeds going to the American Red Cross - Japan Earthquake & Pacific Tsunami Relief.
Chicago's WXRT radio personality, TERRI HEMMERT was the event's emcee. Also, performances by some of Chicago's finest musicians of Beatles music.
At this event, The HARRISON STREET UKULELE PLAYERS
performed all Beatles songs including a Japanese song,
"SUKIYAKI", dedicated to the people of Japan.
This song will be part of the repertoire for this May Day event.
